The best men's haircut for your face shape: what actually suits you?

Why does the same cut look great on your friend and flat on you? Most of the time, the answer is face shape. The right haircut balances your proportions; the wrong one makes even a great cut look dull.
Find your face shape in one minute
Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror and compare three widths: forehead, cheekbones and jawline. Then compare your face length with its width.
- Oval: Slightly longer than wide, with a softly rounded jaw.
- Round: Length and width are similar, with a soft jaw.
- Square: Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are about the same width; the jaw is angular.
- Long (oblong): Clearly longer than wide, with straight sides.
- Heart: A wide forehead and a narrow, pointed chin.
Oval face: almost anything works
The luckiest shape. Textured crops, pompadours, side parts — even longer hair — all work. One caution: heavy fringes that cover the whole forehead can throw off the balance.
Round face: height and sharp edges
The goal is to make the face look longer. Volume on top and short sides do the job.
- A high fade with a pompadour or quiff
- A textured crop with short sides
- A classic side part
Avoid: volume at the sides, bowl cuts and blunt, rounded fringes.
Square face: show off that jaw
A square face already looks strong; the cut should soften it without hiding it. A classic crew cut, buzz cut or a short side part with a low fade all look great. Leaving some texture on top balances the angles.
Long face: width, not height
A tall pompadour makes a long face look even longer. Instead go for:
- Classic cuts that don't take the sides too short
- A French crop or fringe that covers part of the forehead
- Medium length with a little volume at the sides
Heart face: balance the forehead
A fringe or medium-length hair swept to the side balances a wide forehead and narrow chin. A light beard to fill out the jawline makes a big difference too — see beard styles for your face shape.
It's not only about face shape
Your hair type matters just as much:
- Fine hair: Short, textured cuts make it look fuller.
- Thick hair: Thin out the sides to keep volume under control.
- Curly hair: Instead of fighting the curl, choose cuts that show it off, like a burst fade or a modern mullet.
And then there's your routine: if you don't have 10 minutes for styling in the morning, a pompadour isn't the right choice.
What to tell your barber
"Short, please" isn't enough — especially if you're getting a haircut abroad. Bring a photo you like and tell your barber how much time you spend styling and what your work environment is like. I ask about all of this at the first appointment, and suggest 2–3 options based on your face shape and hair type. We can talk it through in English.
