Beard styles for your face shape: 8 of the most popular looks
October 22, 2026 · 3 min read

A beard is the easiest frame to change on your face. The right style sharpens your jawline and can make your face look longer or wider. The wrong one can make you look older or more tired than you are.
Choosing a beard for your face shape
- Round face: Short on the sides, longer at the chin to lengthen the face. An angular line-up is a must.
- Square face: Short sides and a rounded chin soften strong angles.
- Long face: Fuller on the sides, shorter at the chin to add width. Avoid a long goatee.
- Oval face: Almost anything works; stubble and a short full beard look especially good.
- Heart face: A fuller beard at the chin balances a narrow jaw.
8 of the most popular beard styles
1. Stubble (3–5 mm)
The lowest-maintenance style and the most office-friendly. Keeping the neckline and cheek line clean is what stops stubble looking scruffy.
2. Short full beard
A full beard of 1–2 cm with a clean contour. Works on both round and square faces; keeping the sides a little shorter slims the face.
3. Faded beard
A gradual blend from the sideburns into the beard, just like a fade haircut. If your haircut has a fade, connecting the two gives a polished look.
4. Goatee
Chin and moustache only. Lengthens a round face; use carefully on a long face.
5. Van Dyke
A separate moustache and a pointed goatee. Full of character, but it needs regular shaping.
6. Balbo
Moustache and chin beard with clean cheeks. Great on square and oval faces.
7. Long full beard
Takes care and patience. It needs a contour and length adjustment every 3–4 weeks so it doesn't lose its shape.
8. Moustache + stubble
One of the most requested looks right now. A defined moustache over short stubble looks mature and well kept.
The line-up makes the beard
The difference between two beards of the same length usually comes down to the contour:
- Cheek line: Close to your natural line, taken slightly low. Too high makes the face look wider.
- Neckline: About two fingers above the Adam's apple. Too close to the jaw creates a double-chin effect.
- Moustache line: Should not cover the upper lip.
When I do the line-up with a straight razor and hot towel, the line is sharper and there's less irritation.
Beard care at home
Don't wash your beard every day; beard shampoo two or three times a week is enough. A few drops of beard oil and a daily comb-through prevent itching and flakes.
