Home barber for elderly and bedridden loved ones in Istanbul

"My father can't get to a barber any more — what can I do?" I hear this a lot. Age, recovery after surgery, dementia or being bedridden — whatever the reason, a proper haircut and shave is a small but important part of feeling like yourself.
Here's how a home barber visit works for elderly and unwell family members, and what I pay attention to.
Why a home barber?
- Safety: For someone at risk of falling, stairs, pavements and traffic are a risk in themselves.
- Comfort: They're far calmer in their own chair, in familiar surroundings.
- Time: It doesn't take half a day out of the carer's schedule.
- Hygiene: For someone with a weak immune system, their own home is safer than a busy salon.
Which positions work?
There are three options, depending on the person:
- Chair or armchair: The most common. I prefer a stable chair with armrests.
- Wheelchair: Brakes on, back of the head supported — a haircut is easy.
- Sitting up in bed: The head of the bed raised and supported with pillows. I cover the bed completely.
What I pay attention to
- I talk to the family first: Medication (especially blood thinners), skin sensitivity, hearing and mobility.
- Clippers instead of a razor: For anyone on blood thinners or with thin, fragile skin, I don't use a straight razor; I take the beard close with clippers instead.
- Short breaks: If they get tired, we pause. I never rush.
- Quiet tools: Noise can be unsettling for people with dementia or anxiety. I use quiet clippers and explain each step before I do it.
- Hygiene: Single-use capes and neck strips, sterilised scissors, disinfected clippers. If there's a fever or infection, we reschedule.
Tips for loved ones with dementia
Book the visit for the time of day they're calmest — usually mornings. Having a familiar family member nearby helps. A mirror can sometimes be confusing, so I can work without one. I recommend a short, easy-care cut rather than a complicated style.
How often?
Every 4–6 weeks for hair, and weekly or fortnightly for the beard. Some families set up regular visits; coming on the same day each month also builds a reassuring routine.
